Bridal sample sales!!!! Ummm but what are they? Are they worth it and what are the dos and don’ts? We put together a little cheat sheet for you ladies to take out all the guess work so you can relax and enjoy to sales!

So what exactly is a sample sale? Sample sales usually come about at the beginning of the wedding season to make room for new gowns for the season. Sample sales are a great way to save money for the savvy bride. We do have some things to be mindful of when going into a sample sale, it’ something you don’t want to go in unprepared, trust us!

Be open minded

If you plan on being successful at finding a dress at these events, it must be said that going in with an open mind to styles is a must. You may not find the exact dress you’ve been looking for all your life, but you may find something that looks amazing on you and at a handsome discount!

Appointments

We suggest finding out if the store holding the sample sales need an appointment. Some stores that are famed for having their huge “trample” sample sales which can be scary and require you to stand in line outside at 5am….its a thing. Others have a lot less drama and require an appointment to get to the sample sale which means there is a lot less to worry about and you can relax.

Research ladies!

Yes you have to do some homework before you go to these things, but don’t worry you’ll like this kind of homework. Have a look at the stores that are doing the sample sales and see what lines they carry and see what information you can get on what designers they have up for the sample sale.

Underwhat?

Underwear! Yes you heard me, make sure you wear the right underwear to the sample sale. You want to make sure you bring a strapless bra, nude panties and some heels! We suggest bringing heels that will be the same or similar height as the ones you would wear on your day. Also spanx…if you plan on wearing them on your big day then bring them to the sample sale so you get the best idea for fit.

No size 0

Don’t think that sample sales are only for ladies who are a size 0 – 4. The sample sales range in size depending on the designer so we suggest asking the stores when you inquire about their events what sizes to expect.

We love sample sales and we have some lined up for you ladies! Don’t forget to make your appointments ladies! Call us to make yours (425) 558-5714

Now that the planning is about to be or already is in full swing, a cluster of wedding shows pop up! Yay!..or is it? Is it important to go to wedding shows when planning your big day? We spoke to Co-Founders Beri Gebrehiwot and Karen Okonkwo of Her Big Day Wedding Show about the pros and cons of wedding shows for a bride-to-be.

Tell us a little about yourselves, how did you get started in the wedding industry?

Hello! Our names are Beri Gebrehiwot & Karen Okonkwo and we are co-founders and co-owners of Her Big Day, LLC. – a wedding show and fashion show catered to the cultural bride. Our mission is to connect cultural brides with vendors who can service their unique wedding needs- and to do that, we have created a one-stop shop where they can connect with vendors, find inspiration and receive guidance in planning their cultural weddings!

The idea of our company was formed during Beri’s own wedding planning experience when she found a huge missing piece in the wedding industry- and that was the lack of resources for cultural brides. Although she found vendors and resources for her western wedding (Day-1), it was her cultural wedding (Day-2) that she felt lost in planning and searching for vendors to meet her needs for her cultural day. After her wedding, she searched the market and found that there was indeed a need across the country- the rest is history!

Karen comes from a party planning background, and after meeting Beri – Her Big Day was officially launched and the first and only cultural wedding show to grace the Pacific Northwest was successfully executed on January 26, 2016.

So what is a wedding show?

A wedding show is an exhibition where professionals in the wedding industry showcase or exhibit their services in hopes of connecting with brides.

Why would a bride to be consider going to one?

It’s the best place to see what various wedding vendors have to offer. Plus, most vendors offer special prices and discounts during wedding shows, so it’s a great opportunity to find your vendors at a great discount! Bonus: some other fun that goes on at a wedding show is the fashion show, prize giveaways, food & cake samples, music and tons of fun!

What kind of vendors can she expect to find?

Vendors at our wedding show are exclusively invited based on their experience with cultural weddings, their overall experience and reputation, the services they provide and whether it fits our demographic of brides. We want to guarantee our brides some of Seattle’s best wedding professionals and help them use their time effectively. Having gone through the wedding planning experience and being a part of various weddings, we both work hard at creating an environment that is complete with their needs- including bridal fashion from various cultures!

Ravishing Marketplace_1

What sets your show apart from the rest?

Our wedding show is unique in the sense that an African bride or Indian bride can find vendors who service their cultural wedding needs, such as henna or traditional, bridal attire! During our 2016 show, our brides represented 14 different ethnicities and cultures. That proves to us that there is a vast number of women, just within our city, who will find our wedding show and online resources useful- and that makes us very happy!

What are the big don’ts for wedding shows?
Wedding shows can be stressful if the bride-to-be is already feeling overwhelmed with wedding planning and has no clear direction in what she wants for her Big Day.
With that being said:

Don’t go to a wedding show overwhelmed- think of it as a fun day-party with your girlfriends, your fiancé or your mother-in-law. Grab a mimosa, or two, take part in samples and take in the festivities!

Don’t go to a wedding show to simply pick up a few brochures, taste some cake and exit through the back door—our wedding show has an agenda full of great events planned throughout the show such as a fashion show, prize giveaways, a dance performance, and a VIP Bridal Brunch to kick start the event in the morning! If you’re going to already be there, you might as well enjoy the entire program 😉

What should a bride to be do at a show?

Do write out a list of vendors you are still waiting to book. Check them out at the show and talk to them! Ask them questions about their availability, ask them if they have any promotionals during the wedding show, leave your email address if they have a guest book at their booth and take their card. Most vendors are good about following up, but we think it’s a good idea to reach out to the vendors you would like to take the next steps with!

Do take lots of pictures! These pics  will come in handy after the show when you’re trying to remember all that you saw and were inspired by- and don’t forget to tweet and share them on Instagram as well, of course!

What’s the biggest thing brides-to-be can look forward to your wedding show?

We certainly can’t choose ONE thing that they should look forward to. Our greatest mission with our show is that each bride leaves INSPIRED and feels like she is several steps closer to completing her vision for her Big Day!
One thing we are doing that is new this year, is our VIP Bridal Brunch. This is a time for newly engaged and planning women to receive great resources and tips on wedding planning & budgeting, hear from a panel of recent cultural brides on their wedding planning and last, a fun segment with celebrity makeup artist Glam By Maryam as she shares professional hair/makeup tips with the bride-to-be!

We trust that the VIP Bridal Brunch will be a huge hit and we hope that brides will look forward to partaking in an intimate and fun, wedding planning day party with us!

What do brides who don’t go to these shows miss out on?
We would say that you are definitely missing out on an opportunity to see wedding inspiration from different perspectives and worlds. Sometimes, we don’t know that we like (or hate) something until we see it live, in person! Think of the wedding show as an opportunity to see some of your wedding visions displayed before your eyes! J

Lastly, for a bride to be who is looking for a wedding show, Tell us a little more about the Her Big Day wedding Show, and what brides can look forward to.

As mentioned above, we are kick starting our show with a VIP Bridal Brunch this year, so please do check that out!
11:00AM-1:00PM VIP Bridal Brunch to include light brunch and mimosas (see details above)
1:00PM – Doors will open to the main wedding show

6:00PM – Show ends.

Throughout the show, there will be prize giveaways and special performances, food tasting from Ethiopian and Indian catering companies and, of course, cake tasting!

Hey guys! Guess what?! We are in prom and graduation season! That’s right! We know some girls don’t want to pay someone to do their hair and makeup, or maybe you jsut really want to do your own because lets face it, 17 yr olds makeup and hair game is waaayyy stronger than what ours was *sigh*. We put together the top finds on diy hair for your prom for all styles and lengths! Girl we got you covered!

1.Whimsical Updo

This one is super easy (Tried and true one for me), hands down one of my faves for medium to long hair. Its cute, whimsical and girlie while being easy enough for you to do it on your own if you know how to do a basic braid. I love this one because it has a minimal use of bobby pins which means when you get home you dont have to go mining for 213098 bobby pins in your hair, you’ll thank us later. 😛

2. Sleek Half Up

For a more relaxed prom-goer this one is is sleek, simple and sophisticated. Take your curling iron or straightner to ad a few loos waves to give your hair some movement and body. A good oil like Moroccan oil or something to keep the fly aways at bay are going to be key to this look. * Tip* use a non scented dryer sheet on fly aways, just wipe the dryer sheet across your fly aways to keep the static down, no joke this works.

3. Chic Pony

Now our trend list wouldn’t be complete without a magical forest wedding, we are in the PNW after all! Greenery is the Pantone color of the new year so why not incorporate some greens in your wedding! According to Pantone, green is the color that symbolizes new beginnings so what could be more perfect? Forest weddings in the PNW is almost a must, what else could be more romantic and magical?

Pink & Grey

Want to go neutral but don’t want to go down the beige route? Try some blueish grey with some blush pink! This combo is stunning and clean! This theme we are carrying over from 2016, call it our “something borrowed” ;). Grey is a perfect compliment if you want to have pink in your wedding but don’t want it to look like your wedding planner was a barbie obsessed 5 year old. It has a perfect blend of feminine and masculine without either fighting for attention.

trends2017-05

For our girly bride, try peach and gold / copper. We love this combo, it’s a grown up version of a girly pink that has a sophisticated touch that’s perfect for your big day! These tones complement each other perfectly, what else could you ask for?

Brides to be hear about trunk shows, but what are they? Are they important? Should you go? We put together some info for you ladies to put your busy minds at ease!

What is a Trunk show?

Trunk shows are events by bridal designers to show off new lines. Many stores only carry a few dresses from each designer, so this is a good chance for brides to be to try on dresses in store that they wouldn’t usually get a chance to.

Should a bride-to-be attend them?

If you find yourself liking quite a few styles from a particular designer, having a look for their trunk shows is a good idea. It gives you the chance to try on all the dresses they have to offer from their newest line. Trunk shows are a great opportunity to have a great time shopping for dresses and seeing the latest styles first! Many stores also have a designer representative or the designer themselves there, to help answer any questions. Designers, representatives and store stylists work with you one-on-one to find the best fit, style and look for your big day including customizing gowns just for you.

What to expect at a trunk show?

Most stores or designers that host exclusive trunk shows are by appointment only. You will be assigned a personal stylist who will guide you through the whole process, find your style with you, accessories and help you in and out of all your dresses. Trunk shows don’t always mean discounts, but some do give you a discount if you purchase your dress on the day, never hurts to ask!

Tips for trunk show rookies

  1. Know what to expect when you’re expecting…..a trunk show
If you find a trunk show on, find the designers website and have a look at what styles they have to get a better idea about what kind of dresses may be in the new line.
  2. Keep your dance card empty
Trunk shows usually happen jan-march so keep and eye for them when you start shopping for dresses. Call your local bridal boutiques to see if they have trunk shows during the year and if they have discounts.
  3. The Squad
As tempting as it may be to bring the whole crew, its usually best to keep your group to 1-2 people. We suggest bringing someone who you trust their judgement.
    Say yes to the dress!
Be prepared to find “the dress”. Many brides-to-be go to trunk shows and then realize they found the dress they’ve been looking for! Make sure that if you are going to one, to prepare yourself (and your wallet) for the event!
  4. Dresses and veils and belts oh my!
Trunk shows aren’t limited to wedding dresses. Many stores also carry stunning bridal accessories like belts, veils, headpieces and garters, so don’t forget to ask about those as well.

We hope this sheds a little light on what trunk shows are so you can go in prepared for your appointments! They are a great way to view lines before anyone else, for those on trend brides. Samila boutique hosts trunk shows for our brides-to-be, here is our 2017 lineup! Call us to secure your spot, they fill up fast! (425) 558 5714
